HISTORY

People were living in Underwood as far back as the 1950’s, when there was no accommodation except for converted huts, on a site that had been a POW camp.

One of these huts was acquired for children’s work, along with space for a weekly evening meeting.

Houses began to appear by the end of the 1950’s, in response to the need for accommodation for workers at Llanwern Steel Works.  By 1964 church had been constituted and named ‘Underwood Baptist Free Church’, adopting a Baptist style of leadership etc but remaining ‘free’ to people of all denominations to be members and fully participate in the church’s life.

In 1968 the church’s building was opened and, later on, the building opposite was acquired, providing what is now called the Oasis Community Centre using the Oasis Project and church activities.

We have always had a heart for the community of Underwood. In recognising this we have added the word ‘Community’ to our name.

We are a work in progress, seeking to build Christ’s Kingdom, by all means, here in Underwood. We are involved in a wide variety of community projects but we have one rule – please don’t come if you’re perfect!
